Final Project:

Concept: a cleaning device called the “Smart house”;
to help with the maintenance of the household. To make it function smoothly and be able to come home to a less stressful environment. The “Smart house” will help the modern day man or woman with a family live a little easier. The “Smart house” will help the modern day man or woman with a family live a little easier.

These pieces of art work are designed to coincide, with the emotions that are associated with the clutter of an organized household. The goal was to use the same colors associated with the clutter of the first piece, and reorganize them to create some sense of order in one’s lifestyle.

Human Computer Interaction Reading:

Our assignment was to discuss 5 different "interface metaphors" from the Human Computer Interaction in Science fiction movies by Michael Schmitz.

Michael Schmitz discusses many different examples of interfaces used in movies and categorizes those interfaces into five different sections:
1."Neuro" technology
2.identification
3.displays
4.speech
5.other I/O technologies

I found films like The Matrix and Minority Report were good views of what is hopefully to come in the future. Even animated films and cartons have a great influence of what younger generations might view as futuristic. There are so many cartons on TV now that represent the future like the Jettsons and Futuramma, technology seems to be advancing in these futuristic movies. The more advanced and futuristic the movie, the closer individuals’ progress into integrating with machines which will inevitably lead to increasing our capabilities power to imaginable lengths.

Choice/ navigation options
In regards to the scene of the Matrix where Neo has a choice to make; to take the red pill or blue pill, Michael Schmitz discusses the idea that "the pills represent a choice similar to buttons". This is very much true and relevant today. We always have more than one option when navigating the web or any interactive animation. For example in a video game website numerous options are created for us so that it is almost impossible at times to create the same effect twice. The character of Neo had the choice to choose the red or blue pill. Each one would guide him to a different path similar to navigation of the web. Each link takes us in a different direction.

Other forms of interfaces.
The film the Island uses a video game as another form of interaction. Interactions can occur between two users without physical presence. For example a virtual fight; the individuals are projected into a hologram atmosphere, both users can then make moves which are then interpreted onto the holographic screen.

Ironically most of these interfaces as portrayed in the movies seem to be preposterous to even conceptualize for one to place presently into our society, but in perhaps in the future 20 plus year from now they will be fully integrated into our societies.

Distort
The word I chose to utilize was "distort". I thought about how often we transform an object from it’s originally form into something different. By changing one element in a piece it is easily distorted. So often in the marketing industry, images are taken and distorted digitally to function for another purpose. I created 2 pieces for this exercise. First I created the fist piece, then I scanned it and digitally distorted it into something completely different; demonstrating how easy it is to distort object with the technology we have today.

In this piece I was trying to illustrate movement using paint.

A new Technology; Human/computer interface of the future:

The "Smart House" for the modern day working individual

Question: Don’t we all want to come home to a cleaner house.
Create an interface that might exist 5 to 10 years from now.
Concept: a cleaning device called the “Smart house”; to help with the maintenance of the household. To make it function smoothly. Come home to a less stressful environment. The smart house will help the modern day man or woman with a family live a little easier.

2 and 3. The blue print of the house or building is entered into the main data base of the house.

4 There is a built in computer system with a monitor and visual screen in the main rooms of the house. Details of the each room visually appear on the monitor when accessed. For example the dimensions and type of objects that appear in the room as well as the type of flooring the room has: carpet or ceramic.

5. Each room is monitored in perspective to the level of cleanliness, ex: the air quality and when it needs to be filtered.
If the room needs to be cleaned an alert will come up on the main data base located in the house.

6. The room will then ask the permission of the user if it can shut down and clean. One can also program the house to preset to do it automatically, assuming that no one is in the room.

7. Air quality will be filtered in standard rooms.
Example: the kitchen: Major appliances will be cleaned on auto clean the stove, the microwave the dishwasher

8. The floor will be mopped automatically with a safety feature to make sure no one enters the area; A restricted zone in the house for a period of time.

9. Automatically a safety feature will be turned on to secure the room, so that no one enters the room “lockdown” in a certain period of time.

10. When the room is done it is unlocked and individuals are allowed to re- entered the room, creating less exertion for the working individual.

Next step… to create an automated machine that crates meals ready “one” comes home

The first two in class exercises revolved around the word "pause" and "sync". I crated the pause piece using texture not color. There is a pause in the black tape rather than using a color to demonstrate pause. The sync piece is "out of sync" .

To me symbols are a form of communication between individuals. They can break down barriers between cultures and languages. They help to communicate. I choose four random symbols that we see everyday, but don’t really notice or think of the importance of the meaning behind them.

a simple smile that represents Happiness

Olym
pic Games symbol; the five circles are said to symbolize the five inhabited continents of the world.

This is an internationally recognized warning sign, usually red or black on a yellow background, meaning dangerous radioactivity.

Symbol used to represent recycling

It is important for us to work with layers. Physically through collages I find I am not that good at it. I am better working on screen or digitally with layers. I see how this exercise is beneficial to us, because many of the programs we work with use layers. For example Photoshop, Quark Xpress for print media and even web animation programs such as Flash work with layers. The News magazines we look at, everything contains layers, Hence the importance of us doing the ollages.

For this assignment we were given several words and asked to interpret them through the form of a collage. These are my interpretations of the words.

  1. 34 is grater than 12
  2. Happy
  3. Monkey
  4. Melancholy; Gloom
  5. Anger; Rage
  6. Hungry; also representational of desire
  7. Self Portrait

Hunger the majority of people in the class created the “hunger” collage with representations of food and people being hungry. My first notion was to think of hunger as desire. I created collage representing desire in our society at the moment. I used Images of women and words that are representational of what it means to want, to have, the things that we must do to obtain what is needed individually to satisfy our desires, therefore desire is a form of hunger.

Melanchol
y; Gloomy. This piece is called “the guilty bride”. I duplicated the image of the bride and I used the colored version and the gray scaled version of the image to represent the tainted and the innocent bride. I used paint and texture in this piece, with careful selection of color use. Because color also relates to feeling I took the original color (a dusty rose) and used darker shades of the color in the piece. The images are torn from each other not cleanly cut, It related to melancholy because it is can be linked to faithfulness and how many people in our society today are not. The emotions that tied with being disloyal and unfaithful are dim, hence the name “The Guilty Bride”.

Self Portrait; a typical facial image depicts a human portrait. I decided to use the lines we were directed to utilize from our in class exercises to depict a heart that is not quiet complete yet (still many things left to discover) or proportional (symmetric). A heat is symbolic of the human anatomy and emotions. I also used texture; elements of color red and yellow are used to show happiness and anger.

Happiness; inter racial relationships are common today so I decide to use this couple to show happiness, they are laughing showing carefree attitudes. Portraying our care free society and how we are now able to mix cultures and races freely. We have become more accepting of things that are different. Positioning of the individuals in the piece; two becoming one.
